Forskolin is a compound seen in Coleus forskohlii, a tropical plant in the mint family. The plant is native to India, and grows wild in numerous countries in Southeast Asia. It’s been used since ancient times to deal with asthma, bronchitis, constipation, heart disease as well as other conditions. However, it became a lot more well-known in 2014 after Dr. Oz praised it as a “miracle” weight-loss pill.
Forskolin comes as an over-the-counter supplement usually containing 10-20% forskolin extract (often called pure forskolin). How Is Forskolin Supposed to Work? Forskolin has become studied as a potential weight reduction supplement because of the way it affects fat cells. Only two small reports have considered whether forskolin causes weight reduction in humans. In a clinical trial of 15 obese men, one group was given 500 mg of 10% forskolin extract each day. After 12 weeks, the body fat percentages of the men taking forskolin decreased significantly – from around 35% to 31% – when compared with those given a placebo. Concurrently, lean body mass in men taking forskolin increased by about 5%. However, while fat mass declined and lean body weight increased, total weight did not change.

Does Forskolin Prevent Excess Weight? Does Forskolin Prevent Weight Gain?Despite the fact that forskolin will not manage to cause weight loss, it might prevent weight gain. In the second study cited above, overweight women who took forskolin gained less weight during the period of 12 weeks compared to those given a placebo. However, the differences were small. The average weight of women taking forskolin stayed about the same, whilst the average weight of the control group increased slightly (1.3 kg). The women did not report any improvement in appetite. A report in rats also suggested that forskolin may prevent excess weight.
Researchers purposefully overfed rats so they would gain weight. The rats were separated into two groups – one received forskolin extract throughout the overfeeding period, another did not. Those that received forskolin gained considerably less weight compared to other group – about 75% less. In addition, they ate less food along with their cholesterol levels improved significantly. While both of these research has revealed promising results, much more research is needed to see whether forskolin extract can prevent weight gain in humans. Summary: Two small research has discovered that forskolin can help prevent excess weight. A lot more research is necessary to confirm this impact on humans.
Both studies of forskolin and weight in humans did not find any negative health consequences. Cholesterol, insulin and blood pressure levels levels were not affected, without any significant side effects were reported. In those studies, 100-250 ml of any 10% forskolin extract was applied twice a day for 12 weeks. The results of utilizing an increased dosage or using it for an extended time are unknown.
